IMPORTANT UPDATE: CENTENNIAL PARKLANDS

No longer on display. Expired on 29 June 2026, 08:45 AM

Keeping Centennial Parklands safe and enjoyable for everyone is our highest priority. To ensure that priority is met, unfortunately two Eucalypts - one located near the Australian Standing Stones and one located near the entrance roundabout to the parklands will need to be removed next week.

We know how much these trees mean to our community, and they are deeply valued by Council too. Both trees have been professionally assessed to determine whether they could be safely retained.

Sadly, a qualified, independent arborist has confirmed that their serious, long-standing structural defects cannot be safely managed and removal is the only safe and responsible option.

The tree near the Standing Stones has a significant fracture between its two main stems, together with a large hollow and internal decay. The tree was also recorded to contain a cavity, decay and deadwood in Council’s 2024 arborist assessment.

The tree near the entrance roundabout has a large split at its base and decay where its main stems meet. The tree was recorded as containing an existing wound and decay in the 2024 arborists assessment report.

In the 2024 report, the trees were assessed as low to medium risk and the recommended approach was to monitor them, rather than remove them. Since then and despite ongoing monitoring, their condition has deteriorated. This is not uncommon where older trees have existing wounds or internal decay, as seasonal weather, wind loading, moisture and natural ageing can progressively weaken already compromised structures.

We are saddened to lose these trees and will undertake appropriate replacement planting as part of our commitment to protecting and renewing the Parklands’ tree canopy.
