Lost & Found
If your pet has gone missing—or you’ve found someone else’s—there are important steps you must take under NSW law.
If Your Animal Is Missing
1. Contact Council
Call Glen Innes Severn Council on (02) 6730 2300 as soon as possible.
You are legally required to complete a Statutory Declaration for a Missing Animal within 72 hours of your pet going missing.
Ask if your pet has been handed in to the Pound. Be prepared to provide:
- A detailed description (breed, colour, sex, age)
- Microchip number (if known)
- Where the pet was last seen
- Your contact details (name, address, phone number)
3. Contact Local Vets
Vet clinics are common drop-off points for found pets.
4. Search in Your Community
Microchipping and registering your pet makes reunification faster. Council scans all impounded animals for microchips to identify owners.
If You Find a Lost Dog or Cat
1. Look for ID Tags
If the animal is wearing a collar with a phone number, call it immediately.
2. Ask Around the Neighbourhood
Someone nearby may be searching for the pet.
3. Use Local Community Networks
- Post in community Facebook pages or groups with a photo and your contact details
- Check for any “missing pet” posts
- Place a notice with the local newspaper or radio station
4. Contact a Vet or Council
If the animal has no ID or you cannot reach the owner:
Council or the vet will scan for a microchip and attempt to contact the owner.
Legal Reminder
If you're unable to locate the owner, you are legally required to take the animal to the Council Pound as soon as possible.
Failing to do so may result in a Penalty Infringement Notice. Keeping a found pet in your backyard does not help reunite it with its owner—they will check the Pound, not private homes.
