Safe Disposal of Syringes

Council reminds residents that syringes are not recyclable (even if the plastic is separated from the needle), and pose a health risk to all staff working at the materials recovery facility. In response to this issue, Council will be undertaking a programmed schedule of recycling bin inspections, and may consider withdrawing recycling services from those residents whose recycling bins contain syringes.

Syringes should not be disposed of in the garbage either.  They should be stored in an appropriate puncture resistant plastic container with a screw top, and disposed of at a community sharps disposal facility, such as the one located at Glen Innes  Hospital.
