COMMUNITY INVITED TO GLEN INNES SCHOOL OF ARTS & MUSIC OPEN DAY!

The whole community is invited to step inside a completely reimagined space, with Glen Innes Severn Council hosting an Open Day for the new School of Arts & Music on Saturday, 20 June from 10.00am to 3.00pm.
Held at the former Severn Shire Council building, 181 Bourke Street, the event is the first opportunity for residents and visitors to explore the repurposed facility and experience how it’s being transformed into a creative, community-led hub.

Mayor Margot Davis will officially open the day at 11.00am, with activities running across the building from when doors open.
“This is more than a look-through, it’s a chance to get involved,” Cr Davis said.
“We already have a strong and active arts and music sector in Glen Innes. This Open Day is about inviting the community in to see what this new space can offer. Council has created the opportunity here, but it’s the community who will bring it to life,” she said.
Throughout the day, visitors can experience a range of presentations, workshops, masterclasses and recitals across music, choir, songwriting, poetry & creative writing, performing arts, pottery, and visual arts, with activities designed to showcase how the space can be used by the community. Additional sessions and activities are still being confirmed, with more to be announced in the lead-up to the event.
The building, previously used as Council offices, has been reactivated as part of a Council-approved two-year Pilot Program, designed to turn an underused asset into a shared creative hub for the community. Constructed in the early 1900s following the establishment of Severn Shire in 1906, the building played an ongoing role in local government for nearly a century, supporting the administration of the district through to the 2004 amalgamation that formed Glen Innes Severn Council.
Its next chapter sees the space transition from civic administration to a place for creativity, learning and community connection.
Activities delivered through the Pilot Program will include music lessons, workshops, rehearsals, recitals, small performances and creative classes, evolving over time based on community interest and participation.
“This Open Day is a fantastic opportunity where people can come in, see the space in action and understand how they can use it,” Cr Davis said.
“For anyone curious about what’s happening inside, or how to get involved, the message is simple, come through the doors and experience it for yourself.”
