Cricketers of all ages and skill levels now have access to a significantly improved training facility, with Glen Innes Severn Council announcing the completion of major upgrades to the cricket nets at the Glen Innes Indoor Sports Centre.

The enhanced nets, which are available for free 365 days a year, are part of Council’s ongoing commitment to improving local sports infrastructure and increasing recreational opportunities for the community.

Delivered as an additional item under the Australian Government’s Black Summer Bushfire Recovery (BSBR) Glen Innes Indoor Sports Centre Stage Three Funding Project, the works had a total project value of $124,178. The project also included the installation of new industrial ceiling fans to improve air circulation throughout the Centre. Equipped with summer and winter modes, the fans will help provide year-round climate control, improving conditions for all users.

The upgraded cricket nets feature a range of enhancements designed to create a high-quality training environment:

  • A new, full cement slab offering a solid, level base
  • New netting to improve safety for users
  • Professional-grade artificial turf surface for durability
  • Rubber surrounds behind the batter and along the sides, which protect balls and reduce wear
  • A low-maintenance design to ease upkeep and ensure longevity

The project benefitted from an underspend of grant funds, which enabled Council staff to carry out some works in-house—reducing costs and ensuring the majority of the project was delivered within budget. This collaborative effort has resulted in a fit-for-purpose facility that meets the needs of the community.

Mayor Margot Davis said, “Stage Three of the Glen Innes Indoor Sports Centre Development marks a significant milestone in improving our local sports facilities,”

“These upgrades will provide our community with a better, safer, and more sustainable space for sport and recreation. We are excited to see how these improvements will benefit both our current and future athletes.”
